Within the past ten years, due to more and more sates legalizing recreational marijuana and the signing of the 2018 Farm Bill, weed has gone wild. However, even though recreational marijuana remains illegal in most states, CBD, a chemical compound found in marijuana and hemp varietals of the cannabis plant, has evolved into a multi-million dollar industry.
While scientific research is lacking as to the benefits of CBD, there is one story in particular that is a miraculous account of the effect of CBD for seizures. A seizure is a “sudden, uncontrolled electrical disturbance in the brain. It can cause changes in your behavior, movements or feelings, and in levels of consciousness.” The extremeness of seizures and the fact that they can be fatal makes the following story that much more monumental in making the case to use CBD for seizures.
One of the most amazing CBD for seizures studies is the story of Charlotte Figis. Charlotte was only 3-months old when she began experiencing seizures and frequent hospitalizations. The seizures, at first, would last approximately 30 minutes, but quickly became longer…lasting between 2 and 4 hours. At first, doctors put Charlotte on a ketogenic diet that was recommended for epileptics who did not respond to treatment.
In the beginning, the diet seemed to be doing the trick, but her immune system deteriorated and she began exhibiting behavioral problems. Two years after Charlotte started on the diet, her seizures came back. Charlotte’s condition became dire. She was not eating, walking or talking and was having 300 grand mal seizures per week. When Charlotte was 5-years-old, everyone had lost hope. Her parents said their goodbyes and doctors put her into a medically induced coma to give her body a rest. Faced with losing her daughter, Charlotte’s mother applied for a medical marijuana card.
Charlotte’s mother found a type of Cannabis that was low in THC and high in CBD called R4. She had the oil extracted and tested in a lab prior to administering small doses to Charlotte. Charlotte went the first hour without having a seizure. After another small dose, there were no seizures for another hour. A week later, there were still no seizures. Charlotte continues to get a dose of CBD for seizures twice per day in her food and her seizures have been reduced to two to three times per month. The strain of CBD for seizures that is used to treat Charlotte was renamed from R4 to Charlotte’s Web.
The sheer amazement of this story, how CBD relieved a small child of the harrowing experience of hundreds of seizures per week, should move you to make CBD a part your life even if you don’t need CBD for seizures.
